The future of Staffs Seniors over-70s cricket
As we look forward to the 2026 season, we would welcome your responses to the below questions to help us plan.
We are keen to continue to develop over-70s cricket and have, for some time, harboured ambitions to play Monday cricket in addition to our participation in The Seniors County Cricket Championship on Thursdays.
This would help us provide cricket to those not selected for the Thursday fixture and thereby maintain participation for as many players as possible.
Without Monday matches as an alternative to Thursdays, we risk losing players to the game.
We have not joined the Monday league for 2026 for two reasons:
(1) uncertainty around player availability, though we do have a number of new players for the 2026 season, including some stepping up from our 60s teams
(2) because some of the away fixtures involve teams that are located long distances away.
However, the league has an odd number of teams and therefore every week one team does not have a fixture.
The intention would be for us to play friendly matches against those teams that are within a reasonable travelling distance AND to supplement that, if possible, with matches we organise ourselves.
Opponents for Monday home and away games might be Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire, and Wiltshire, for example.
These games would be open to our over-65-year-old players, (providing we do not select too many in any single game) hence, their inclusion in this request.
Would you please complete the below - this will help us develop our over-70s strategy for 2026 and beyond.
